Clenching and the Night Guard

Clenching and grinding in your sleep wears teeth down over the years. A clear guard made to your own bite lets the guard take that wear instead of the tooth.

Average duration40 minutes

Clenching often goes unnoticed; the first signs are a tired jaw in the morning, flattened tooth edges or sensitivity to cold. A night guard does not stop the habit — it puts the force on the guard rather than the teeth.

The process

  1. Examination: wear facets, jaw muscle tenderness and the bite are assessed
  2. Impression or intraoral scan
  3. The guard is made individually in the laboratory (about a week)
  4. Fitting: seating and bite are checked
  5. Wearing it, with a check-up every six months

Why an off-the-shelf guard will not do

Shop-bought guards are not made to your bite and can concentrate the force on a few teeth, making symptoms worse. Yours is made from a measured bite and adjusted at the fitting.

This page is general information and does not replace a dental examination. Whether the treatment suits you, and the method and duration, are decided only after an intraoral examination and radiographic assessment.

After treatment

Wear it every night, brush it with cold water in the morning and store it dry. Never rinse it in hot water — it distorts. Wear is checked every six months.
