Check-up and Digital Imaging
A six-monthly examination: intraoral check, digital X-ray if needed and a written summary of the day. A record is kept even when nothing is found; the next check-up is compared against it.
DetailsTartar is plaque that has mineralised along the gum line; a brush and floss cannot remove it. Cleaning consists of lifting the tartar with an ultrasonic tip and then smoothing the surface with polishing.
How it is done
- Ultrasonic removal of tartar above and just below the gum line
- Hand instruments for the remaining rough spots
- Polishing: plaque attaches more slowly to a smooth surface
- Fluoride for sensitivity where needed
Most patients do not need anaesthesia; areas with gum recession may be temporarily sensitive.
When it is needed
Bleeding, reddened gums and bad breath are the most common signs. If the gum pockets have deepened, cleaning alone is not enough and periodontal treatment is planned.

After treatment
Cold and heat sensitivity is possible for the first 24 hours. Brushing continues the same day; bleeding settles within a few days.
