Check-up and Digital Imaging
A six-monthly examination: intraoral check, digital X-ray if needed and a written summary of the day. A record is kept even when nothing is found; the next check-up is compared against it.
DetailsA crown covers the whole surface of the tooth. Because the zirconia core contains no metal, no grey line forms at the gum and light passes through much as in a natural tooth. Full zirconia is preferred for back teeth, porcelain-layered zirconia for front teeth.
The process
- Examination and X-ray; confirming the tooth can carry a crown
- Shaping the tooth and a digital impression with an intraoral scanner
- Temporary crown; laboratory fabrication
- Try-in, bite adjustment and cementation
When it is needed
Teeth with little left beyond a large filling, teeth that have become brittle after root treatment, or cracked teeth. Crowns on implants and bridges are made from the same material.

After treatment
Do not chew hard or sticky food on a temporary crown. After the final crown is cemented, normal care; floss along the crown margin too.
